The MANA de San Diego Scholarship Program was established in 1991 in memory of Sylvia Chavez, a talented and tireless volunteer of MANA de San Diego. Sylvia Chavez was a women who believed in the power of higher education as a means for Latinas to achieve equal participation in the social, educational, and economic arenas of this country. Once the applications are received; the applications are reviewed and recipients selected by a talented and dedicated volunteer committee based on academic and non-academic criteria of the applicant including: leadership, community involvement, educational aspirations, career goals, grade point average, special circumstances, and financial need. A special Scholarship Reception is held annually to recognize the Scholarship recipients and their families.

Since its inception, MANA de San Diego has awarded over 230 scholarships, over $140,000, to deserving Latina women in our community for community college through doctoral programs. Each year, we continued to honor exceptional role models.
