REALLY GOOD HEALTH NEWS

The primary theme of the San Diego Día de la Mujer Latina will be breast cancer prevention and control. Accordingly, mammography screening and breast clinical exams will be offered at no cost along with booths and presentations covering a wide range of information related to breast cancer. However, we are planning for the San Diego Día de la Mujer Latina to offer other health screening tests and information to promote the good health in our community. We are planning for an attendance of 700 to 1000 participants.

This year MANA de San Diego is partnering with other great San Diego health agencies and programs to bring to San Diego, the Día de la Mujer Latina, a health festival in the spirit of the MANA Health Reunions.

Día de la Mujer Latina (DML), was officially organized in 1997 under the leadership of Venus Ginés with the implementation of the first Latina wellness event, held in partnership with the Atlanta Mexican Consulate Office, American Cancer Society, Latino merchants, community-based organizations, as well as local hospitals and county health clinics. The event offered breast cancer education, culturally appropriate screening, follow-up care and patient navigation to poor underserved, uninsured Latinas in Atlanta and 7 surrounding counties. The success of the event led to it being offered on an annual basis and the dissemination of the model to other cities in the US and Puerto Rico.

The Susan G. Komen Foundation generously provided funds for a part-time coordinator/case manager position for the event. This generous support is providing a solid basis to coordinate the event and to ensure adequate follow up upon the completion of the event.
